3.5 stars.

From reading this book, I learned a lot about daily life of the time, but not much about the war of 1812.
In any other book I would’ve liked all the detail, but this is a diary. All the specific details and conversations take away from the diary feel of it. Other than that, it’s a pretty nice book.

It was a nice read, but I'm a bit disappointed in the timeframe : the diary starts in May 1812 and ends on November 1st of the same year, when I thought it would cover the entire war. This choice is a bit strange to me as it makes the book end abruptly, and the rest of the story is briefly told in a 3pages epilogue.
It was nevertheless interesting to learn about the 1812 war and the way people lived back then!

Well written perfect for the intended age group . Makes history come alive for 9-12 year olds without boring them. I even learned a few things!!!-

Favourite Quote “It is a game to them.” She muttered. The men fight and the women suffer.”

And then she didn't end up with Ellis and my eleven-year-old heart felt a sting of BETRAYAL.
