Just as good as the reset of the series. Moving on to the next one straight away!

More of the same, a little bit of action and a whole lot of nothing talk. My annoyance at the names has been overshadowed by the endless inner monologue that takes place in this series. It's so tedious and unnecessary. Just get on with the story, which, sadly, I'm actually interested in and it may cause me to actually keep reading the series.

I continue to plow through this series, but it's nothing great. The books are long and I have them for free, but it's too much exposition to be too enjoyable. This book had more action, which Weber's exposition heavy style worked better with, but the other areas were just as bad as always.

While I absolutely loved the first two novels in this series, it may be succumbing to the law of diminishing returns. I merely liked this one very much.

By this, the third novel, I’ve come to like the protagonists and wish them well. That said, reading this series is like playing an RPG on the Easy setting. Our heroes are so overpowering that the novel lacks tension: it’s an exercise in being there while good people triumph over favorable odds.

Still, I like this world and I like these people. I’ll let the series rest for a few months before I read the next volume, and I do look forward to reading more about the adventures of Nimue Alban and her friends.

Oh my! This series is so good! I am so thrilled that I can continue to discover the stories about Charis and it's battle against the Church of God Awaiting. Weber is a master. His command of what has become a very large cast of characters is truly a thing of beauty. This is #3 of the series and I have yet to get bored at any point. Everything is relevant. Even the interpersonal relationships have a richness that lacks in many "literate" works.
So glad I discovered this gem.
Next up: #4 A Mighty Fortress!!!

good story, still holding my interest, but it gets a bit long in places.

Unlike most of Weber's books, this one *didn't* climax in a huge battle. And despite the fact that I *love* Weber's battles, this was still an wonderful book. It's book three of his Safehold series (don't read this without reading the prior two), and Weber is really hitting his stride with the characters, the world, and the situation that he's stuck them all in.

As a one-sentence summary, By Heresies Distressed is essentially the post-wedding consolidation of the new Empire of Charis, and the conquest of Corisande.

There are certainly *some* battle scenes, and *some* technological superiority going on, but this is primarily a book that tells a story of political drama. If you had told me that politics what what the book was about before I'd started, I would have had serious reservations about starting it. But the truth is that it was hard to put down. Weber did a fantastic job of connecting all the dots and making a real *story* about what was going on.

I was very impressed, and I'm eagerly looking forward to the next in the series.

5 of 5 stars.
