As distasteful of a novel as going to a slaughterhouse to see where your steak comes from, it is still a compelling character study about the worst person to serve at any fine dining establishment.

I was super excited for this book (cannibalism? women?!) but I didnt like all the graphic sex talk (ew!) so this book just isn’t for me. The authors writing style and the story concept definitely had potential though!

The writing captured the pretention of the writers career in food journalism. As most people who eat with their eyes I feel like I could have been more excited about the storytelling in a visual format like a movie or TV show. Living in the head of the main character didn't give us the space to empathize with her nor the distance to understand the charisma that must have existed to allow her to move through the world as she did. A third perspective would have really served.

Somehow incredibly compelling and brilliantly written with sharp wit as well as insightful reflections, all this despite being almost entirely unrelatable. It's little gory at times, but very selfaware about that (the narrator literally calls you out for skimming over parts exactly at a moment i was going to do just that). Marks a clear distinction between the narrators psychopathic lack of remorse and the anthropological nuances/stigma around anthropophagy. I likewise enjoyed the literary references peppered through, they didnt seem forced but rather a side effect of the author's PhD in eighteenth century literature.
