This was a great book! It took me a bit to get through, but the last 150 pages I breezed through. That’s what I love about Nix’s writing; it’s slow and builds up the background, which leads to an action-packed ending!

Spoiler

I want to say that I didn’t love the relationship between Lirael and Nick. It wasn’t very underdeveloped and truly felt as though it came out of nowhere. Of course, I did skip The Creature in the Case, which may have provided more substantial information for their relationship. It just felt as though they barely knew each other, and since I had skipped that story, I felt like I didn’t know Nick as well as Lirael!

However, I did think Lirael’s story was particularly charming in this installment and I’ll miss her character so much (Garth Nix give us more Lirael challenge!!). I enjoyed how in this story she really grew into her position and began to discover herself more.
Spoiler
It was incredibly heartbreaking when Lirael saw her mother in the past and I think that overall the Remembrancer plot line is super interesting (though, I do wish it were used a bit more).

I also, of course, teared up a bit when the Disreputable Dog made an appearance at the end because I missed her presence so much in this book.

Ferin was a character that I also felt could’ve had much more to her. I think that her introduction was good, but then we hardly learned more about her as the story progressed.

I also would like to know the proper way to pronounce Athask, because I’m fairly certain they don’t say and there is a mention of Touchstone being the only one (aside from Ferin) who pronounces it correctly.

Sabriel and Touchstone! I was so happy that they were actually a significant part of this story again! I was reminded of how much I love Sabriel’s character and how we definitely need another book centered around her again!

It’s no surprise that my favorite character is, once again, Lirael. I loved her story and she’s genuinely just so <3
