I hesitate to rate this because, while it was good, I have read it (or parts of it) a few different times for school and have, as a result, found it as "homework" more than anything else. That being said, this is a very good account of slavery and particularly Frederick Douglass' life. Douglass is so intelligent and his writing is engaging. Like all homework, though, I got bored by the end.

Definitely don't regret the read and feel it's important for literally everyone to read at least once.

Such a wonderful and painful piece of writing. There are so many instances of enslaved life that I have never considered before, and Douglass details them in ways that connect them not just to the realities of American slavery but to how those realities affected the enslaved psychologically.

Another great narrative outlining the hardships of enslaved peoples. Such an important read.

Nothing breaks my heart more than the fact that we’re still battling an uphill battle against racism, 200 years after this man escaped the jaws of slavery.

The history shelf at my local bookstore is a dangerous place...this is one of the books that I bought after going in to just "take a look and not buy anything."

Being Scandinavian, slavery is a bit distant reality to me, familiar through school history classes and movies/TV. This true story, written by a man who spent many years as a slave, is an amazing read.

Douglas has no need to make his story sound "super dramatic", that's what it already is. Instead he focuses on analysing slavery and the society that accepts treating other human beings as slaves.

After escaping from slavery, Douglas spent his life helping others and talking about slavery. I have nothing but respect for this man and hope that this book would be read by as many people as possible.
