Just as good as the first one, with an ending that will literally crush your heart into a million pieces 😭

How to write a review for a book you enjoyed reading very much, loved the characters, but just felt a bit empty after finishing?

Well, I really don't know how to begin this review. This book duology (soon to be moreology!!) is easily a cult classic in many bookworms' hearts. While I understand the love and admiration many have, I felt as if I was grasping at straws at some points. I think I definitely enjoyed Six of Crows, however, this one just didn't live up to the hype. Since I always have high expectations for top performing books, I am always super critical of their content and tend to nitpick at every detail (although I try to refrain from such behaviour).

Firstly, I, WITH MY WHOLE FUCKING HEART, ADORE NINA AND MATTHIAS. The one thing I was super on board for was NINA AND MATTHIAS exploring their relationship and accepting each other. Matthias has especially shown me the biggest character development out of everyone. I was expecting more from the other dregs. This book did show more weaknesses of each character (compared to Six of Crows) and how they're still coping with their own demons, too afraid to confront them so quickly.

I found the plot itself to be a bit messy and left me wanting more. In contrast with SoC, this plot line was flatlining a bit.

I also the dregs don't seem like a cohesive unit. And it may be all because of KAZ. His coldheartedness, which started out in SoC, has flawlessly seeped into Crooked Kingdom. I hated seeing Inej, Nina, Jesper being so close to each other and Kaz just being an awkward entity who seems to not want to engage in such dramatics. And I understand that is his niche, I just would've liked to see him warming up a bit more and actually being the glue of the crew.

Overall, I enjoyed reading the book. Maybe in the future I will bump up the rating or do the complete opposite. However, for now 4 stars seems appropriate.

I suppose I just like Pain. Because that’s all this book is. I love it.
