So much of what makes The Great Gatsby great is the quality of the prose. I wasn’t sure how that would translate to a graphic novel but it was cleverly done and the art was absolutely perfect.

“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy—they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made...”

I loved this graphic novel adaptation of The Great Gatsby, which has me wanting to read the original now! What took me into the story the most was the commentary on excess, ennui, and morality—how the glittering surface belies a rotten interior.

Overall, would recommend this adaption because the water colour art in this edition are so stunning and totally have blown my mind! I would just spend countless minutes staring at the art, immersed in the scene, which really amplified the story. I need to read more graphic novels now by this illustrator!

I read this graphic novel side-by-side with the 2020 version by Fordham, and I must say I found this one to be infinitely better.

First, I must start by saying that I don't care for "The Great Gatsby" as a story. Despite that, I thought Woodman-Maynard managed to capture the essence and vibes of the original novel marvelously. The way she interpreted some metaphors literally effectively echoed the novel's unique language, and her usage of colour was skillful. Additionally, each character was unique and identifiable, which is obviously important in any form of literature. Overall, this book invoked the proper emotional responses at the appropriate times - no easy feat for capturing a mega-classic.

I read this graphic novel side-by-side with the 2021 version by Woodman-Maynard, and I must say I found this one to be substantially inferior, despite its length and depth.

First, I must start by saying that I don't care for "The Great Gatsby" as a story. That being said, I appreciate Fitzgerald's skilled use of language, which is clearly what this version was capitalizing on. However, simply using the language and pairing it with drab illustrations isn't enough to bring a mega-classic to life. The characters were hardly distinguishable from one another, and the colours used don't reflect the extravagance of the Gatsby life. Yes, this version is perhaps more true to the novel in a literal sense, however it doesn't capture the aesthetic and vibes of the original, which I felt was a huge mistake for a story with an emphasis on frivolous richness.

I grabbed this because I can never remember much about the original. Reading this convinced me that I remember more than I’d thought! This is well done, but I really *really* despise all of these people! Ugh. :)
