This is a ridiculously impressive start to what is going to be a ridiculously beautiful series of books from Drawn and Quarterly reprinting Tsuge’s work.
Presenting everything chronologically eases the reader in to the wildness approaching with future volumes.
These early stories are pulsing with potential, you can feel them pushing out - and knowing there is more to come, fully unleashed, makes reading these more restrained stories that much more exciting.
But even without this future knowledge of where things go, all the stories stand up on their own as morally complex renditions to a variety of traditional genre tales.
Additionally, the companion essay by Asakawa is perfect - giving loads of informative contextual reference while remaining concise with its execution.
What a start, can’t wait to read the rest of the series as they come out!

I believe it will be it's "destiny" to become a "secondhand book" which coincidentally were my two favourite stories !

I’m largely unfamiliar with manga, especially literary manga. So when I learned Drawn and Quarterly would be reprinting Yoshiharu Tsuge’s work I was excited. Exploring literary comics in America was a treat I was very curious to see how Japan would tackle it. Tsuge fulfilled my expectations. This collection of short stories features excellent art and story telling and I’m excited to see how he progresses through the next D+Q collections.
