This was really good. It did take a bit for me to get into though. I really didnt like him at first and was close to DNFing but I loved Out on a Limb so much that I had to keep going. It was worth it, once they both started talking to each other I loved them. I loved Luke too, his younger brother who he has custody of. The whole story was really sweet and satisfying even when it was tense/sad. I highly recommend it.

No star rating yet. I enjoyed a lot of it.

However, it was published in 2022 yet there’s a HP reference. This is made worse by the fact that the FMC’s best friend is trans (this actually slipped by me, I was listening to the audio and never heard this).

As for the rest of the book:

While I still enjoyed the romance, it wasn’t my favorite aspect in the beginning. I was much more interested in Chloe’s path to raising Willow.

During the second half, I became a bit more invested in the romance. I was glad that the book brought up Warren’s anger problems and how he was dealing with them, but I don’t know that the way it was all handled will sit well with everyone.

Listening to the scene where his anger comes out the most, jarred me.

Most of the content warnings will be in that section, however i did want to mention the anger. There is a scene where a male character yells towards the female character and punches a wall.

𝓝𝓮𝔁𝓽 𝓸𝓯 𝓚𝓲𝓷
Next Book 1
By: Hannah Bonam-Young
Contemporary Romance
Paperback

𝒪𝓋𝑒𝓇𝒶𝓁𝓁: 4/5
𝒮𝓅𝒾𝒸𝑒: 2/5

𝑅𝑒𝓋𝒾𝑒𝓌: This book has reinspired me to pick up learning ASL again, I have taken a couple classes but since I graduated I've been slacking so I'm going to get myself to focus on it again.

It's very different concept than any other contemporary romances I have read recently which is really nice. I enjoyed that Chloe, Warren, and Luke do not just have any easy time, because while I have never been nor have I had someone I've been close to been part of the foster/adoption system, I do know that it is a process that takes it's toll and Hannah shows it in this book. How Chloe struggles with her adoptive parents and birth mother, the anxiety that Chloe experiences when she seens it's CPS calling her, Warren's anger issues, Luke being a people pleaser. And those are just a couple of examples and it is really nice to see characters learning to heal rather then meet a partner and everything being fine and dandy right away.

I could resist, try to swim out, try to avoid it-but it would be easier to float. And, for the first time, I'm not scared to."

I really enjoyed this!
My favorite things:
1. Deaf representation!
2.
Warren is a very giving lover, and has the sweetest and also the dirtiest mouth on him. Total hottie!

3.
I was PRAYING the third-act conflict wouldn’t be either a breakup or Connie relapsing. Thank you, Ms. Bonam-Young, for taking a different tack!!!

A few things kept this from a higher score for me:
1. I wanted Chloe to be more verbally expressive to Warren about the nice things she thought about him. Not at his level (but SWOON!), but I felt like Warren deserved a little more verbal affection.
2. Chloe didn’t pick up on one of the things Warren said soon after moving in and repeated later in a more romantic context:
“I don’t want to be your friend.”
The second time he said it made his original intent obvious. Chloe didn’t make the connection, which was a little disappointing.
3. Whyyyyyy were we never shown Rachel’s visit to the apartment and evaluation of Chloe’s circumstances???? What a missed opportunity for some higher-stakes tension!
4. It was pretty insta-lovey, which on one hand makes sense (Chloe and Warren share v similar pasts in addition to their present similar situations), but on the other was a bit concerning, given both their traumas. Their repeated statements of wanting “forever” when they’ve known each other five months at most worried me.
5. Warren does a bit of a 180, personality-wise. The book is in first-person POV (Chloe’s POV), so it’s understandable that she might not have picked up on Warren’s more concealed positive attributes, but Chloe doesn’t comment on either her surprise or reflection with her new understandings of who Warren is. This and my second list point made Chloe seem entirely unobservant, which was frustrating.

TL;DR — Fast-paced and mildly steamy, but also heartwarming. I loved the recurrent themes of healing and forgiveness, as well as opening up to and being vulnerable with loved ones for deeper bonds.

per my spreadsheet:
because of the dedication, i read all the mmc's dialogue as if Jess from gilmore girls was talking and that made it even more enjoyable than it already was.

spice 🌶  - a 4 🌶  spicy (romance.io scale)
length - just right
reading speed - read in 2 days
did it make me cry? - yep

This was a nice read. She worked with sensitivity readers and it landed well. The dedication is what drew me in (something like “For anyone who thought Jess was Rory’s best boyfriend.”) and I’m glad I tried it. The characters were lovable, the scenario felt real, and I just love a read where the communication isn’t just awful. They were actually pretty open considering the situation. Would indeed recommend for a quick, lovely book.

While it is not categorized as YA, I would recommend this book to someone much younger than me. The characters and overall plot were great, but it felt extremely underdeveloped at times. Next of Kin is a roommate to lovers romance. If Chloe and Warren want to be legal guardians for their respective young siblings, they must live together through CPS’s TeamUp program. I enjoyed the disability representation in this book—Chloe’s sister was born with fetal alcohol syndrome and Warren’s brother is deaf—but every time Warren called Chloe ‘dove’ I wanted to vomit. I would still recommend this book to a friend; I think I just expected too much. My overall thoughts summed up: not a lot of substance, but cute-ish.

FRIENDS. Hannah Bonam-Young does not disappoint. ever.
Any story of hers, I will read always. Every main character she writes? I am a fan.
She writes stories that are geared and level with the likes of Emily Henry - if this doesn't catch your attention -- Her MMCs are swoon worthy to the highest degree.

This book was so incredibly unique - specifically because it dealt with an intricate and difficult topic (that not everyone can relate to but SHOULD be aware of its implications) and includes a cast of main /supporting characters that are fighting various battles of their own (but also together).
The amount of support that pours out of HBY's novels is actually astounding and it reminds you just how much you DESERVE to have others support you/to support others around you!!

We get a found family is the most wholesome of ways, we have amazing supporting characters who make the novel feel whole and complete, we have WARREN - who has a mouth that will make you BLUSH (not kidding)  - we have CHLOE who makes space for others and learns to make space for herself - and we just overall have a story that is just chefs kiss perfect.

Honestly I wish it were longer because i love chloe and warren.
Additionally, what I LOVE about HBY is that her stories are so full circle, nothing feels disconnected - and you dont get silly third act breakups AKA GREEN FLAG <3

Fave quotes so you can fall in love :)
"Show me the messy parts, OK? God knows, I’ve shown you mine."

"I could resist, try to swim out I may have referred to you as a whirlpool… as cheesy as that may be. I could resist, try to swim out, try to avoid it – but it would be easier to float. And, for the first time, I’m not scared to."

“Warren and Luke held space for my fears, my hurt, and my worries. Not once did I feel like I needed to hold back, diminish, or hide. I had never felt that way before.”
