Giving this one a genre label is about impossible. Supernatural? Yes there's a bit of that. Adventure? Yes. History? Well if you count the "colonialism" aspect thought this happens in a parallel universe. So maybe sci-fi? Not really feeling it. Whatever it is, I loved it. There are characters that made me feel and want to cheer for them or string them up. There is witty dialogue and a feisty and intelligent female. Most of all, there are truths that make you think.

It turns to gold after 100 pages! I know that sounds bad but it hooks you in once you slog through!

I love Pratchett's work but I found this non-Discworld novel unusually hard to get into. This was because of the beginning where young Pacific islander Mau (who is not a boy, not yet a man) is caught in a tsunami and survives to find his home island devastated, his family lost.

A shipwrecked English girl is now the sole inhabitant, and the story turns into a masterpiece that challenges the reader to think; about history, geography, science, religion, civilisation, and life and death.
