This collection of Nick Hornby's monthly column for The Believer is so delightful, I only put it down to look up the books he recommends.

Nick Hornby makes me want to buy a subscription to the Believer, a magazine about which I know nothing except that he writes their book reviews, kind of. His columns are more about his relationship to the things he reads, the context of reading in his life, and less about dissecting plot points. One could say they’re not really reviews because the point is rarely about the actual book. He rarely has an ill word to say about the books he’s read. It’s about his feeling about a book, how it fits, how he chose it. You’d be surprised how fascinating it is to read about how another person chooses their reading material. I get a lot of good book suggestions, but more than that he challenges me to think about the why of reading. Gets me to wondering why I like what I like.

This book is for avid readers looking for recommendations. It is comprised of several articles written for a column. Some of these articles are very entertaining, and others are quite dull. I believe my interest in the individual articles has more to do with my interest in the books he read rather than Hornby's ability, or lack thereof, to write an interesting article. I have only read one other book of Hornby's, "Juliet, Naked." I gave it three stars as well. I find Hornby mildly entertaining, and I am planning on reading some of his book recommendations. I highly recommend the book if you want to explore a variety of books to read.

This is the second of the Believer column collections that I've read. I enjoy his writing style in these even more than in his novels, but we have very different taste in books, so the pieces aren't as personally useful as they could be.

I love reading about other people's reading. It's one of my favorite questions to ask: what are you reading now? You can learn a lot from the answer.
