This almost felt like three mini Temeraire books. I enjoyed the amnesia section in the beginning (I seem to be in the minority) although I would have preferred alternating POV chapters as a way to increase tension as the pacing sometimes felt a little off. It was great to see the emotional contrast of how different Laurence is now from 8 books ago and watch him struggle with decisions he didn't remember making. The middle section felt like a nice callback to Throne of Jade and explained a bit why China might get involved against Napoleon - also some nice critical looks at the British Empire. Two new cultures and two new ways of dragon handling, the third section was a return to books 1 and 3 and some more classic aerial military, with a decent twist at the end.

The next to the last Temeraire novel finds Temeraire separated from Will. After a bunch of diplomacy, they lead an Army of Chinese Dragons towards Russian to help with the Napoleonic war. It is an enjoyable story, but felt a bit like filler.

Fair warning, despite being mentioned in the description, we don't reach Russia until 70% of the way through. I was initially going to give this 4 stars for the China portion of the book, since it seemed kind of out of nowhere. But the angstyness of Laurence not remembering who he is and then only to recall once he sees Tharkay? Hell fucking yeah, that's what I'm talking about.
