The plot thickens for like twenty times?

Gahhhh! I don't remember this book being so packed with goodies, but I loved it the second time around. The separation of Sunny from her older siblings is such an interesting dilemma to explore, and there's so much character development that happens for all three orphans as a result. The reveal of Quigley is perfect, and I love the hints that something deeper than friendship is brewing between him and Violet. The reintroduction of characters we've seen in past books who might have had a more sinister role in proceedings than we knew is also perfect. Just- yes. I'm so pleased with the amount of agency in this book, and the way it moves at such a neck-breaking pace from start to finish.

I loved this book. The whole series has good educational bits cleverly slipped in (and this was no exception). The story moved along in some interesting, unexpected but always brilliant twists and turns. Can't wait to get on with the next one - but getting sad that I'm almost through the whole series.

The story becomes better and better! I also love the fact that Sunny grows older book after book.

This series is really developing into a substantial collection. This book has much more than just the adventures on the "slippery slope" - it delves into the greater mysteries of the VFD, the frequent fires, the Quagmires, and even the background of Count Olaf and his troupe. The Baudelaire's also begin to discover that they can fight back against the Count without resorting to his monstrous ways.
Despite its more serious subjects, the author manages to maintain his humorous tone:

"In my opinion, well-read people are less likely to be evil."

"Nothing is going right for me today! I'm beginning to think that washing my face was a complete waste of time!" - Count Olaf

Audiobook bonuses: Tim Curry's amazing voice impressions and evil cackles (there are so many in this series) as well as thoroughly dreary background music. I'm bummed my library doesn't have the Grim Grotto on audiobook.

This is probably the most mysterious book in the series yet! Although you learn more about the VFD, more mysteries take shape that just make you that much more addicted to the series. This one was the most fun by far, as the series is about to hit the climax as the Baudelaires get closer to the, ironically named, Hotel Denouement.
