I really enjoyed these two books. I didn’t expect to because it’s YA but they were both really good. Strong female lead which I also really liked.

What a powerful start! I can see the effort gone into making this strong to begin. Great worldbuilding and plot. Enough suspense to keep me going but not sure I’ll read the sequel.

I'm a big fan of fantasy books, but one of the things that I sometimes find overwhelming about reading them is catching up with the magic system and feeling comfortable with the world the story is set in, but this story does this well. It doesn't take too long to understand what's going on and how things work. The one issue I had with the magic system and how they're divided was addressed in the plot and it was satisfying to get to that point and understand along with the protagonist.
The characters themselves are very authentic and I care about their issues and struggles. Even when I don't agree with them, I can relate to them and don't find anything about their motivations frustrating from the perspective of a reader. None of them really fall flat and I'm engaged with the story and just as enchanted with the world.
The description of the soul magic is visceral and the right kind of upsetting. There isn't a point in which I don't understand the weight of it whenever it's being used.
Overall, I enjoyed it, and it was smooth to read.
