The philosophy lessons are the best part, and if the book was purely a collection of them I would have given it 5 stars. The plot is interesting, but the characters just don't speak in or think in believable ways. The dialogue is awkward and stilted and repetitive. A great book information- and plot-wise, but the characterisation drags it down a bit. Definitely a good book for learning about philosophy but I wouldn't recommend it as a novel.

That said, I would read it again simply because its near impossible to adsorb all there is to learn from this book in a single read.

Good easy reading history of philosophy with enough mysterious story around it to stand on its own rather than feeling tacked on to facilitate the former.

Some/a lot of the dialogue seems unrealistic or perfunctory but between the overall story and it being a work in translation it's not really any bother.

A compelling account of philosophy from Plato all the way up to Sartre.

Bruh the bits about philosophy were so boring (aka 50% of the book) because I just don't care I guess for someone interested in philosophy this would be great but soooo boring for me
The book within a book concept was cool I guess, but badly executed and the ending was lame
Also no way 15 year old girl (hilde/sophie) is reading the philosophy stuff and A) even understanding it and B) eating it up

Left the last 10 pages because Sophie's attitude was really eating me.
