The fictional elements of this story were well woven into the facts presented in the historical notes at the end of the book. I enjoyed the plot and the interrelations of all the characters. The villains were cartoonishly evil at times which took me out of the story, and Vix was a total punk and drove me crazy. This was very character driven and intriguing enough that it kept me reading but I would have enjoyed more context and atmosphere of ancient Rome outside of the immediate characters. The colosseum events were well depicted but I would've appreciated seeing more aspects of society at the time for a historical fiction.

This is a classic Kate Quinn in that it has a very lengthy exposition, takes a long time to get going, and feels at times confused about the ultimate plot BUT the last 100 pages were very exciting and engaging. Unfortunately you have to plow through a lot of seemingly random exposition to get there. Middle dragged on forever. Gory.

I was looking for more historical information to learn something about ancient Rome. This focuses too much on
gore and rape

definitely a book i couldn't put down once i started reading. lots of character death, and towards the end some made me tear up.
i hate paulinus almost as much as lepida, especially at the end.

Page turner. I actually picked it up previously and couldn’t get into it, but this time I couldn’t put it down! It was shocking, entertaining, and emotion provoking.

This book is not for anyone who is sensitive to most triggers. This book has most all of them. Be careful, take care
