Entry #20 on my quarantine reading list.

I was hesitant about picking this one up because I was a bit let down by book 1. As much as I loved David and Murdo as characters, I didn't like how they fought all the time and the amount of reluctance on David’s part. This time around was a lot more to my liking. We got much more interaction between our MCs, intimate and otherwise, and it was nice to see them starting to form a friendship instead of being at odds all the time. I also didn't mind the Elizabeth side story this time. I found her silly and naive before, but now was more sympathetic to her cause. Although I didn't much care for Ewan, he still seemed shady to me. Overall this installment was much more enjoyable than its predecessor. It also set up a nice premise for the final book in the David and Murdo story arc, and I am very much looking forward to how it all turns out in the end.

I enjoyed this more than the first one but I don't really understand the romance. These characters don't have anything in common and don't seem to like each other much. Maybe it would help if we had Murdo's POV.

This book takes place a while after the first one did, and continues Murdo and David's relationship. The overall plot of David trying to help his boss's daughter escape and abusive relationship was a strong one, and I was more focused on the plot of it than I was the first book's plot.
David's internalised homophobia is very frustrating at times in this book.
I was on holiday in Edinburgh while reading this book (which is set in Edinburgh), and David mentioning which streets they were on in the story while I was walking around the city with my earphone in one ear helped me connect to the city better. There's a scene where David gets mugged in Fleshmarket Close, and the next day I was walking off the Royal Mile and by chance looked up and realised I was standing across the road from Fleshmarket Close.
At the end of this book the two main characters move from Edinburgh to Murdo's house in Perthshire, and that happened as I was taking a bus from Edinburgh to Perth - a greatly timed coincidence.

Non è facile per un seguito eguagliare l’esordio, ma – per quanto mi riguarda – Incanto merita il punteggio pieno!
Il secondo libro di questa serie riparte due anni dopo la conclusione burrascosa del primo volume e si sviluppa nell’arco di un mese – un mese ricco d’avvenimenti.
Per fare il punto della situazione, dobbiamo ricordare che David e Murdo si erano lasciati in malo modo, litigando sulle rispettive convinzioni inconciliabili e il loro ultimo bacio aveva il sapore di un addio definitivo.
Dopo due anni senza mai contatti, Murdo fa ritorno a Edimburgo, come rappresentante della sua nobile famiglia, per la prima visita del re alla città.
Un incontro casuale lo fa imbattere in David e la passione fra loro si ravviva in fretta, mentre il tempo lontano è servito a quietare gli animi infervorati da un lato e a creare nostalgia dall’altro. Ritroviamo gli stessi protagonisti conosciuti nel primo con le loro peculiarità, ma in qualche modo sono cresciuti e maturati, sono scesi a più miti consigli. Anche se frequentarsi nuovamente porterà a riaprire vecchie ferite, i due cedono alla passione, regalandoci piacevoli momenti intimi e attimi di tenerezza, perché non è solo bramosia dell’altro, ma un sentimento dolce che in questo volume sta bocciando sempre più.
Rispetto al primo, dove gli intrighi e le investigazioni avevano parecchio spazio, questo è un volume più pregno di sentimenti e di legami – amorosi, familiari e amicali – anche se non mancano imprevisti e un bel pezzetto da batticuore. Anche la parte politica e di lotta sociale ha il suo spazio ed è il substrato di molte azioni e convinzioni ma, ripeto, mi è parsa secondaria rispetto ai sentimenti.
Ho amato il cammino di David, la maturazione che ci viene presentata e il fatto che stia finalmente capendo come trovare un equilibrio con se stesso, con la sua omosessualità e con ciò che prova per Murdo.
Murdo, dal canto suo, è meno machiavellico e più umano, più sensibile e coinvolto emotivamente.
Abbiamo qui modo di conoscere meglio il passato di entrambi, soprattutto del nobiluomo, con piccoli frammenti di ricordi che arricchiscono il quadro della loro caratterizzazione.
Nella storia ritroviamo alcuni personaggi che abbiamo già conosciuto, come il mentore di David e la sua famiglia, e vecchi amici che fanno ritorno; ma troviamo anche personaggi nuovi, primo fra tutti il monarca, che ha a che fare con i nostri eroi, e il capitano Sinclair, che avrà un volume tutto suo più avanti.
La trama è ben congeniata, il ritmo narrativo mi ha così coinvolta che l’ho divorato in un giorno solo e la resa italiana è davvero ben fatta.
Mentre spero che il volume che chiude la trilogia arrivi presto anche da noi, non mi resta che consigliare questo a tutti quelli che hanno letto il primo volume, a chi ama m/m storici e, semplicemente, se cercate un’ottima storia.

I'll not give any spoilers, but this book ties in neatly with the first and continues with its twist on tropes regarding male and female characters. The small one is soft and harsh, the big one is buttery and blustery. The women have a small part but enough depth to not feel like half assed literary tools.
Genuinely well written, beautiful narration (the rrrrroll of the rrrrrs!), and just really enjoyable. And frustrating because what's a little romance without some idiots trying to dance around courtship.

Uff... buenísimo! Super romántico, con una trama muy atrapante y una sub-trama que me entretuvo bastante.
Parto diciendo que me gustó mucho esta nueva línea narrativa que se abrió con la historia de Elizabeth. Fue interesante cómo la autora unió la sub-trama del libro anterior, al traer de vuelta al personaje de Euan, cruzándolo ahora con el conflicto de Elizabeth. Aunque fue muy poco creíble y quizás un poco forzado el repentino interés y enamoramiento de Euan por el Elizabeth, ya que solo se habían visto una vez antes de que éste se declarara flechado por ella, ese detalle no afectó en ningún momento lo invested que estaba por saber si tendrían exito con el plan de ayudarla a escapar. Wn esa escena del teatro, donde David y Elizabeth deben arrancar del marido de ella ??? casi me da un infarto! Espero que David se recupere bien del accidente porque es tan buena persona, no merece sufrir más wn
