3.5 stars. It’s enjoyable, but a bit slow and predictable for me. With it being predictable, it was easy to set this aside and read a handful of other books in the meantime. It would make for a perfect romcom between 2000-2004.

Laura is hung up on her parents’ perfect love story that her mother told her throughout the years. Her dad had passed when she was a child, so she relied on these stories to understand him better. Now nearing 30, Laura is working for an online magazine where she pitches an idea to head to Jersey and relive the magic her mother shared in her stories before she passed a few years prior.

After Laura arrives and gets situated in her hotel, she quickly realizes that in her rush, she grabbed the wrong piece of luggage at the airport. After digging through its contents, she discovers clues that lead her to believe that her perfect match is the owner and that she’ll have a love story as beautiful and wonderful as her parents.

But when your expectations are that high, things are bound to come crashing down.

Audio. Cute. Predictable.

Just Haven’t Met You Yet by Sophie Cousens
3.5/5 Stars
Read January 2025

Just Haven’t Met You Yet is well-written with relatable, kindhearted characters readers will fall in love with by the end!

Positive messages: 2.5/5
Sometimes you have to make sacrifices for the things and people that you love. Life isn’t always easy—it gets complicated. Just because someone seems perfect for you doesn’t mean that they are right for you (you don’t always fall in love with your perfect match). Characters learn the importance of family, honesty, compassion, and kindness.

Positive role models: 2.5/5
Laura, the main character, manages her emotions pretty well during the novel. As she navigates her struggles, readers will come to know her and understand her faults and strengths. She displays courage, kindness, thankfulness, and other traits throughout. She learns to stand up for herself and find that fire in her soul—taking risks and being confident.
Ted, a cab driver, is kind and compassionate and you can tell that he starts to care for Laura. He is sensitive to her emotions and a very comforting character.
Belinda, Ted’s ex, talks about self-love and mental health, some of the ideas (including ‘spirit animals’) Christians may not agree with.
Jasper or “Suitcase Man” is patient and kind as Laura goes through her own feelings—uncertainty, love,...
Gerry and Sandy, Ted’s parents, are very supportive and kind as they go through their own challenges. They welcome Laura into their home eagerly.
Vanya and Dee work with Laura and are friends to her when she needs them, offering advice but also being open and honest about their opinions on various matters.
Suki, Laura’s demanding boss, is a typical boss-lady. Sassy with attitude but also some good traits in there, she has personality for sure. I wouldn’t call her a positive role model, though!
There are some smaller characters that add to the overall storyline, displaying kindness and love but also lying about their past.

Drinking, Drugs, and Smoking: 2/5
One character gets drunk to the point where she feels like she can’t stand up. Some drinking to excess; other instances are mild.

Language: 3/5
‘Damn,’ ‘f—k,’ (frequently) ‘f—king,’ ‘a—,’ ‘b—h,’ and other mild cursing.

Violence, Gore, and Scariness: 0.5/5
There are some more sensitive topics (divorce, broken family, dying loved ones, illnesses, etc.) but none of which are gory or should be considered ‘violent.’

Sex, Romance, and Nudity: 3.5/5
Flirting, touching, and sexual jokes/comments. A character kisses two different guys in the same day and recognizes that it is “probably not the best decision.” There is one ‘closed door’ sex scene around ¾ in that can be easily skipped (2 pg). It is implied that one instance of premarital sex (‘fling’ not described) leads to pregnancy.

What You Should Know:
The book was adorable—don’t get me wrong—but it just took me forever to get through. If I had sat down for a few hours and read it in a sitting, I might have enjoyed it more. But it isn’t one of those books that you just can’t put down.
However…it was still an enjoyable read. The love triangle wasn’t realistic, per say, but it was understandable and both the characters had different personalities.
Overall, the book was pretty appropriate except for a short, skippable sex scene ¾ of the way in and language throughout. I would say for teens (if the sex scene is skipped) and adults that have read Sophie Cousens or authors like her before.
