This story (at least to me) felt like reading a beautiful long quote that captured a special moment of someone’s life. The writing flows effortlessly. I always say this but if you think you don't like books written in verse you have to read one by [a:Lisa Schroeder|588558|Lisa Schroeder|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1378418358p2/588558.jpg].

In the beginning of the book we are presented to Amber who is planning a whole day to herself, before the dreaded next day in which her life will never be the same. We don't know what is hanging over Amber's head, but as the reader you certainly have your suspicions. On Amber's day she plans just to live and fill herself up on things she loves. Pretty early on she meets a boy named Cade. Cade is also ditching his life for a day, trying to keep his mind off of something as well. Together they will share their secrets and live a day unlike any they have had before. You're probably thinking, how much can you learn about someone in one day? Every once in a while, a day can feel like a lifetime.

It's always a bit surprising to me how quickly I fall for the characters in Schroeder's stories. She is stupendous at this type of writing. You never feel like you don't know the characters or that there isn't a plot. She just knows how to use just the right words to spark an image or an emotion.

It's going to sound odd but I usually do not fall for these kinds of scenarios, where in one day so many things happen. But I bought it completely. It didn’t feel awkward or forced, in other words it was pretty darn close to perfection.

This is rarity among books, but I loved every single word of this story.

Meh.

Wow, this was a satisfyingly quick read. This book is written in verse, and I'm tempted to write my review that way! Alas, I will stick with what I know, and it's normal sentences. ;o)

I loved the mystery in regards to sixteen-year-old Amber's life situation. The reader knows something big is in the works, but Schroeder only hints at it at the beginning. As the story unfolds, both first hand from Amber and through letters within the past three years, we learn the truth, and it wasn't what I thought at all.

The words on the pages tell a story, but their placement does as well. The reader can feel Amber's emotions through the words, few though they may be. In running off for a day to herself, she meets Cade and things turn out much differently than she thought they would. And you'll never guess what HIS big secret is.

This book really teaches you to be grateful for what you have and never assume what someone else's story is. Chances are, you have no idea what they're going through. It's also important to live every day like it's your last! I'm very glad I read this fast, eye-opening, surprising read.

What caught my attention with this book? The cover. It is just stunning and I am in awe of it. Then I read the summary and I knew that this was something I had to read. I actually did not realize until I began reading it that it was written in verse. Before this might have bothered me, but after reading Crank, I was excited to see if another author could tell a story completely in verse as well as Ellen Hopkins could. Lisa Schroeder can. This book was just...beautiful, haunting.
Although I did not understand what she was going through in the beginning, I loved Amber. She is caught between two worlds without much power or choice over either. The chance of one day of her own is not something she can pass up. The emotional turmoil she is struggling with felt very familiar. She is desperate for some for of control over her life, but in the end, it is the adults in the situation that will ultimately decide it for her. Cade was very mysterious in the beginning. We really do not get to know his back-story until fairly far into the book. I had my own guesses about what his story was going to be, and I was pleasantly surprised to find them wrong. The relationship that develops between Amber and Cade feels like it should be wrong. After all the time they spend together is less than twenty-four hours, but somehow it feels completely believable and natural. They have a bond beyond that of the average young couple. Although her appearance is very brief, Amber's best friend is another standout character. She seems like the truest kind of friend, one that will do whatever they think is necessary for a friend they love. Amber's mother and sister were also fantastic characters to know, even though they do not ever really "appear". Despite that I felt that they were people I would love to be surrounded by.
From the first words until the last page I was completely enveloped in Amber and Cade's story. It is beautifully written and a nerve-wracking story that will keep you wondering. The relationship that blooms between them is sweet and heartfelt. I loved reading about every part of the day before.
All in all this book surprised me, in a good way. I thought it sounded interesting and something worth reading, but I did not expect it to be so phenomenal. In some ways, at least for me, I think writing in verse allows a story to be even more moving than one written in prose. Poetry feels as if it is straight from the soul. I highly recommend this book and I am looking forward to reading others by Lisa Schroeder.

I love the characters that Lisa Schroeder creates. I always feel such a connection to them and what they are experiencing in the book. Amber and Cade are both facing extremely difficult situations. One doesn't really have much choice in the decision and the other has made a tough choice. The day before life changes for them - fate brings them together for one special day.

An enjoyable story written in verse. A quick read for those teens who want romance, but with some outside depth to the family stories. Every time I read a novel in verse it always amazes me how much emotion and feeling can come across in so few words. This one is done well. My only hesitation was that I felt very confused for much of the beginning, and kept thinking the worst was coming, and when I found out what was really going on with each of them, it didn't seem like that big of a deal after what I had been thinking...but I suppose that was the intent. I imagine I will have many students who read and love this one.
