2 stars.

listen, i was a big gallagher girls fan as a teenager. i ate those books UP. so when i found out ally carter was writing an adult spy romance? i was HYPE. i was ready to revisit all my gallagher girl feelings and have a great time.

but this? this was not it. i feel like this fell into the “booktok trap” of being more concerned with fulfilling a list of tropes instead of telling a good story. there’s several points where the characters even point out the tropes, like when zoe says “there’s only one bed!” or asks if sawyer and alex had an “enemies to lovers” thing going on. imo it’s lazy! also, zoe was incredibly immature. it almost felt like zoe belonged in one of the gallagher girls books with the way she acted like a teenager for the entire book. the way she kept berating sawyer for “language?” i get it’s supposed to be *quirky* but it ended up just being obnoxious.

and the ending was so rushed! like you’re telling me that these two are willing to throw away everything they know just to be together, when they’ve known each other LESS THAN A WEEK. that’s not even an exaggeration; the book takes place over the course of six days. couldn’t be me, y’all.

still though, i can’t rate this 1 star because i was entertained for a good chunk of this, and like it or not that sequel bait at the end had me wanting more. if ally is going to write more adult romance, i just hope that she remembers she’s writing for adults, not teens, in the next one.

What a delight this book was for this long time fan of Ally Carter and her Gallagher Girls series! In true take-me-back style, I read this in one sitting and “gasp!”-ed and swooned appropriately. The action was well-paced and the romantic tension was just what I was expecting and wanting. Thank you to NetGalley and Avon for the ARC!

This was a cute book, but I can't say it was the most satisfying. For all the twists it seemed pretty surface. Still I enjoyed myself and wouldn't mind reading the sequel that is strongly hinted at in the final pages. The romance itself was fine- it doesn't jump off the page or seem very special, but it's nice enough in its predictability. It's a shorter book, which I appreciated after reading several books that needed to be about 100 pages shorter. All in all it's a pleasant way to spend some time.

Ally Carter wrote the books of my childhood. I read those spy books a million times. I’m so happy she wrote an adult spy novel it make my little heart so happy! It was good, I wish it was a little better but I still liked it a lot. maybe I just don’t read a lot of spy novels anymore but it’s a lot of fun

After dropping the last few romances I picked up, this has revived my love of the genre. The author described things vividly without it overtaking the narrative. The main character was like a romcom main character dropped in an action film which just made the story so endearing. It’s a little predictable at times, but in the most charming way. The plot twists are well done and keep you on the edge of your seat waiting for more. This book was fun with a bit of danger, romantic tension, and humor that is very targeted for book lovers. Great read!

This was a fun audiobook. It was fun, fast paced, action packed and cute. I enjoyed the playful chemistry of the romantic leads. Zoe and Sawyer reluctantly team up to flee the Russian mob, narrowly escape death, and fall for each other along the way. This is a great read if you want to be entertained with a fluffy, silly spy romp. Just don’t expect to take it too seriously because you may be disappointed when it gets corny and repetitive. I was satisfied with the story - especially the ending.
