Okay, first things first… I would not have described this book as a thriller. The blurb suggests a story a lot darker and more twisted than I actually got and I was a little disappointed by that. It says a lot then, that I still rated this book 4 stars on Goodreads, because as a novel, it was bloody great. An emotional little drama with a thread of crime woven throughout, delving into the lives of three women who all are linked in some way to Gil, a mysterious man who appears to be the answer to their different specific needs.

Split into three distinct parts, each one dedicated to the one of the three women, a format which worked well to keep their stories personal to them. This was a slow burn but a quick read, the tension builds very very quietly as we learn more about the individuals and as the novel reaches it final section the reader is almost desperate for that elastic band to snap! I enjoyed the ending but it was a little anti-climactic as I’d guessed the turns the author was taking by the latter quarter of the book.

I’d have loved a little bit more insight into the ‘why’s’ and ‘what fors’ but I appreciated the authors choice to focus solely on the stories of the women, this was a great example of a male author writing interesting, layered and sensitive representations of female characters, even if I was silently screaming “RED FLAGS!” to them through the pages.
