This was not my favorite book in the series. It dragged in a way the others didn't. However, it was still a touching look at what makes us human.

I was a little wary at the beginning of this book, because I didn't see a clear theme like the previous two books. Once it become clear, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It felt like it was a little slower to start than the other books, maybe because there wasnt a clear end goal like the first book, or a clear link between characters like the second. I loved learning more about the Exodans and their culture. I was heartbroken at what happened to Sawyer, even though it felt like I barely knew him. This book made me think a lot about human nature. It was a return to that "Star Trek-like" feeling the first book gave me. Lots of characters to care about, and social issues to ponder. I'm sad that the next book is the last, and this series is now on my wish list to buy as physical copies.

The ending of this novel made me sob. It was so impactful at demonstrating the beauty of humanity, no matter where we end up in the universe. This is one of the more "human-centric" stories that Chambers has written so far in the Wayfarers universe and I feel as though this might partly be why it sits somewhere in the middle for me. The beginning portion of the novel felt really slow for me, and not in the usual Becky Chambers cozy way. It was difficult for me to really find myself getting close to the characters, which is never something I want to experience. The novel really picked up after a certain scene and I feel like that is when I began to understand and really embrace the message the novel was putting forth.

Once again I love this world that Becky Chambers created and I thoroughly enjoyed being back in it. This was a wonderful look at life on the Exodus fleet and seeing the lives of the people who live there. This is another character driven story and once again it was expertly done. Even with the large number of characters I found myself deeply engrossed in each of there stories ❤
