This book is about a man who spent a summer with two young boys he just met while their dad was in prison. They end up with a bond that lasted forever. It is truly the sweetest story I’ve read in a while. One of the qualities I appreciate the most is kindness and this book shows how acts of kindness can touch people’s lives more than you think.

This is both a clear eyed look at alcoholism and its costs and an addictive tear jerker tale. It is slightly tidier and more positive than reality is, but not so much that it ceases to be gripping. For one thing, Hyde understands that many people just don't have money. For another, she doesn't award perfect romances to all her characters .I loved the book and fell for the people it brings to life. And of course for Woody. I never say this but i hope there is a sequel.

"people learned by what they experienced. it mattered little what anyone said to anyone." perhaps reading is my raison d’être ♡

4.5 stars. The story of two boys with an alcoholic father in and out of prison, who make an unlikely friendship with a man grieving the death of his only son. Another heart-tugging story from Catherine Ryan Hyde. This one hit quite a few of my soft spots: foster children, dogs, a parent with a degenerative disease... but as usual the author brings it all around to a happy but not fairy-tale conclusion.
