The presentation is cute, and there are occasional glimpses of what could have been interesting stories, but the humor is to impersonal and samey for my taste. Always having the "brown" option, without any risks, is just immensely boring to me...

Now, comedy doesn't need swearing or obscenity in order to work, I'm okay without dark humor if that's not on the menu. But Bones was a children comic and it was funny!

The way I see it, Waiting Castle makes for an okay reading to kill the time, but it's nothing memorable or something you need to seek out. Which is a pity, because the premise sounded amusing to me...

If you want a similar example of this sort of comic that I would actually recommend, check out the Dungeon series by Sfar and Trondheim.

(I did not read the book to completion btw, only the first half of it).

I was thinking of this as a graphic novel when I read it, which made it seem very strange and wander-y. But now I realize it's a collection of comic books. It makes more sense if you think of them as related short stories. The other thing that makes it weird is that the author seems to have run out of money to publish the rest of her stories, so there's a lot of loose ends at the end of the "book." But really, even without knowing that this is a delightful book about wise women and bearded nuns and circuses and pregnant women on the run. It's a very nice female-community kind of book, good for a rainy afternoon or cozy evening by the fire (if you have a fire, or you could draw a picture of fire).

I'm not a big reader of manga, graphic novels, or comics. I picked up this collection as part of a reading challenge, and I am so glad that I did! This book is just so absolutely charming, especially the second half. The collection starts with a retelling of the classic Sleeping Beauty story, but the author then moves into her own world and story. The Castle Waiting of the title refers to an old castle which has become a refuge for anyone in need and the book is full of episodes and stories from the lives of the refugees.

I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone who enjoys fairy tales and wants to try reading something a little different. Now I have to see if there are any further volumes available!

I loved this, but it committed that common sin of stopping instead of really ending. When the reader runs out of pages to turn, it feels as though Linda Medley stepped out mid-story to answer the telephone and then decided not to come back. Sequel, please!
