Clever dark themed descriptions and twists on ‘classically admired’ traits or appearances, use of language etc. However I personally couldn’t find myself particularly enjoying it (although could be part of the point) and
Spoiler I wanted a bit more of a resolution (although the ending kinda fits with the general feel of the book)

this book is filled to the brim with the sugary-sweet sensations and bright pastels of an acid trip that’s about to go horribly wrong (which isn’t far from the events of this story).

extremely imaginative and told from such a unique and captivating prose. awad’s writing is atmospheric and deliberate with every word. the book is purposefully pretentious, making a number of critiques on social power dynamics and the pompous elitism of academia. very captivating story sprinkled with the brilliance of a sort of post-feminist creative writer.

We were just these innocent girls in the night trying to make something beautiful.

A different concept than most of my reads that kept me intrigued because I never really knew where the story was heading. I missed some things in the beginning that made SO much sense once I got to the end, but it was fun to try to unravel what was truly happening. While there’s a general plot point, the main story follows the MC and her journey through her work and how it is influenced by the company she keeps and the experiences shared with them. What kept me most interested is how the narrators voice altered in language and style as the company and experiences changed as well.

Spoiler If the main story is about the author describing her experience with schizophrenia, then it leaves a bad taste in my mouth because while it doesn’t overtly have discriminatory language, it does portray people with schizophrenia as having violent tendencies and being unpredictable which contributes harmfully to the stigma surrounding mental illnesses

convinced that everyone writing 4+ star reviews of this book are doing a weird, satirical homage to the bunnies themselves. this book was lame and tried too hard and had me thinking i was in a reading slump because i was having the hardest time getting into this - i had to take a break after every chapter. the writing was grating in a way i can't describe and the random grammatical errors were distracting. i'm honestly just overwhelmingly disappointed. i looked forward to reading it, i felt like i only ever saw glowing reviews of it, and now i'm certain it was just another overhyped book i got duped by booktok to read.
