The only reason I picked up this book was because it was free. We got an advance copy at the bookstore where I worked and I thought I'd check it out. What a waste of time. Not only was the story laughably stupid, but it was rife with typos. I understand these may have been corrected before it was actually published, but unless the story was completely rewritten I wouldn't ever be interested in reading it again.

3.5 stars for me.
OH MY GOD.

I bought this book because I thought it was going to be like Percy Jackson and about greek mythology. I clearly should've looked into it more. I REGRET NOTHING. I got this at book outlet without realising it was actually not greek mythology (although one character was called Zeus so that may count).

So Michael Vey wasn't what I expected. This is the story of a good nice kid who also has only one friend (who happens to be a kick ass genius. LITERALLY) and they're both really unpopular and bullied. To top it all, he has a crush on the nicest and coolest girl on school, who happens to be way out of his reach. One day though, he gets tired of people pushing him around and a secret he has kept to keep his mum safe comes to light and everything changes from them. His biggest problem? Taylor, his crush, witnessed everything and now claims that she has a secret of her own. Secrets however are to remain secret for a reason and all this fuss has brought attention to both Taylor and Michael. Enter, Hatch the bad guy who promises he's on the good side (You're seriously not). Exhibit 1: He kidnapped Michael's mum to use him. Exhibit 2: He took Taylor too.

So now he has to ask his enemies and his BFF to risk everything to save them, and probably the world. So imagine his surprise when he learns there are other kids with his kind of secret as well.
Michael is such a strong character. I loved how much he cared about his mum and how understanding he was all the time. He's a natural leader and in that way he reminded me of Percy.
My only issue with the book is that even thou the pace was great I felt like the book and the scenarios themselves could have been a bit more developed, maybe with more details and sometimes the characters didn't seem 15 but more like 10 but it was still an interesting read. I can't wait to start the second one and see where Michael and the Electroclan will go. Can I join?

Definitely recommend this. Got me hooked. Will do a video review on my channel (;

Ended up reading this to my 5th grade class as a read aloud.
