"When the first terrashot exploded, Mr. Thompson-Chang, who was trying to ride the fool thing, was turned to dust more or less. Miss Grundy was far enough away from the blast that she only suffered a ruptured eardrum, but she was, tragically, downwind, which meant she inhaled a vast quantity of terrashot spores (as well as, presumably, much of the remaining mass of her late boyfriend)."

There's a kid you know who is going to get a huge kick out of this bestiary.

The illustrations were fantastic and the stories creepy. I didn't read them all because I have issues with collections like this. But I enjoyed the ones I did read.

A rare interactive treat. All three of my kids gathered around to hear me read and each have taken it in turn to read themselves. The best part is the integration of the glow paint and the way of changes the page it is on. We all would rush to a closet to get the full experience in full dark laughing and gasping as we did. Just wonderful.

After seeing SLJ's review comparing Fearsome Creatures to Scary Stories, I was expecting something much more frighteningly fun. Instead, Johnson's book falls more on the comedic side of things. Still enjoyable, but definitely not something to keep you awake at night.

Also, I'm not really sure what the constant slams against the French are about. At first, I thought Johnson was going for a "this was written around the turn of the 20th century" sort of angle (fitting, given it's a reimagining of a collection from the early 1900s), but then he shares an account from the 1990s...

Caveat: I didn't make it through the entire book. The first few stories I read were humorous and spooky, but more creature descriptions than stories or tales. Probably less truly creepy than Alvin Schwartz, but for kids looking to be spooked, this might be a good choice, especially for upper elementary kids.
