Possibly one of the best Batman books I've ever read.

“Taking place during Batman’s early days of crime fighting, The Long Halloween tells the story of a mysterious killer named Holiday, who murders people on holidays, one each month. Working with District Attorney Harvey Dent and Captain James Gordon, Batman races against the calendar as he tries to discover who Holiday is before he claims his next victim each month, while attempting to stop the crime war between two of Gotham City’s most powerful families, Sal Maroni and Carmen Falcone.”

This is also the story of Two-Face, how he went from district attorney Harvey Dent to one of Batman’s rogues gallery. While this isn’t my favourite villain, I do appreciate a good origin story!

What I loved:
  • Tim Sale’s art is top tier!! The covers are so 90’s but the character designs too, favourites were Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Poison Ivy
  • The pact between Batman, Gordon and Harvey Dent (also Captain Gordon at this time). Without Jeph Loeb, I doubt we would have Batman Begins.
  • Specifically Harvey Dent’s turn to Two-Face, it makes sense

Honestly I have only one concern, and I wouldn’t even call it “What I hate” because it keeps you guessing but it kinda annoyed me…

  • Each person I suspected as Holiday
Gilda Dent, Alberto, and Harvey Dent
was correct… but tricked me. Again while this isn’t a negative and you should still read, I was confused and trying to figure out how they did it.
  • Honourable mention: Joker’s teeth. Iykyk

This is a classic, and it lives up to the hype. I really enjoyed the twists and turns, and wasn't expecting what happened at the end. I love when classics remained unspoiled (although I wish they'd kept the true story as part of the movie. The movie was incrediblely depressing at the end.)

I believe in Batman.
A classic, riveting superbly compelling comic, even if the very end is a bit disappointing.
