Great book!

At first I just couldn't get into the story. However, about half way through it really got interesting. The story follows different characters in segments. The book is about a serial killer who is murdering everyone who is connected to Eve Renner and Our Lady of Virtues Asylum. He is terrorizing Eve along the way and stalking her.

HUGE plot twist at the end! I never saw it coming which was nice. The whole book left me wondering what was going to happen next. I can honestly say I never figured out who the real killer was until the author told me. Which was a nice switch since usually I have the books I read figured out within the first few pages.

Definately recommend this book.

I'm pretty sure this was a Lifetime movie. Still, it suits for a quick, easy and intriguing read on a Friday night.

Action and suspense were good. Setting was interesting. You sort of have to read the books in order if you want to understand the relationships.

Eve Renner receives a mysterious call from her friend Roy Kajak in the middle of the night, asking her to meet him at his uncle’s cabin. She leaves her boyfriend Cole Dennis behind and finds a gruesome scene at the cabin. She soon senses she’s in danger and in a flash, she’s shot but not before seeing Cole’s face in the window. Three months later, she returns to New Orleans following her recuperation and Cole is released from jail since the evidence against him is shaky and Eve’s memory of that night is faulty. However, it’s soon clear that whoever murdered Roy isn’t done and there’s a serial killer in their midst and the victims are all tied to the closed and abandoned Our Lady of Virtues Hospital.

Sound familiar? A serial killer in New Orleans with a descriptive name (The Reviver) who uses religious themes as part of his mission and is connected to that abandoned asylum…the same themes we’ve seen in the prior three books. And, the author continues to liberally use racial stereotyping throughout. Lastly, there are continuity errors that are inexcusable, making the resolution implausible.

My rating has very little to do with the story because I’m finding the repetition beyond tiresome. However, the relationship between Eve and Cole is interesting and the narrator, Joyce Bean, delivered an incredible performance. I listened at a faster speed level to get through it quicker. Otherwise, this would be a 2-star rated book. I’m only reading/listening because I’m participating in a group read of the series. Unfortunately, I think I’ll wave the red flag, signaling the end of my participation. This author is just not for me. 3.5 stars for the narrator.

I listened to this not realizing that it was #4 of a series. Even so, it was easy to follow along with this book. This book got me through a few days on the elliptical trainer, but was not as compelling as books that get me through the elliptical more readily. I thought the ending was strange, and since I was not planning to read/listen to any more in this series, just not a good ending for me.

Lisa Jackson is a master of suspense. She gives the reader just enough clues, and then throws a twist in at the end to bring a satisfying surprise. Along with a fast-paced plotline, Lisa creates great characters. If you have read her previous books, you'll be reacquainted with some familiar faces, such as Detectives Bentz and Montoya. While this is a stand-alone novel, the glimpses of back-story revealed should entice new readers to look up past titles.

So this is a bit different from the type of book I've been reading lately. Didn't realize it was part of a series until the end, oops. That being said, you can definitely read it without having read the previous books. I felt like a few of the main characters weren't as developed as I would have liked (Eve, Cole). I did really like the detectives though. And towards the end there were a lot of curve balls thrown in, which while it definitely kept me guessing, I also felt like it was going a bit too far sometimes
