This book was difficult to read. Nellie Bly talks about women being forced to stay in the asylum even though they are mentally stable as well as women being mistreated and abused by staff. My heart breaks for the men and women who were treated this way. Iā€™m so glad Nellie Bly was brave and decided to get a first hand account of the asylums.

3.5 out of 5 stars!

This was an informative read, but I was not too fond of the pretentious way it was written. Nor was I fond of the graphic descriptions of the different kinds of abuse the author encountered ( I was expecting a less detailed description but was caught off guard by the disgusting way people can treat others).

I gave this 4 stars because I truly expected more information on what happened inside the walls of the asylum.

I understand things like that weren't spoken about back then, but I'd hoped.

The language can be a little harder to understand, as I wasn't very familiar with the spoken word of then time period and often had to re-read paragraphs.

The book seemed kind of thrown together, going from topic to topic, with little or no segway.. or formatting prompts.

Just not my cup of tea. I already knew all of this, because of American Horror Story Asylum, which I would recommend to anyone who can handle scary/eerie things šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸ˜Š

I was interested to read a first hand historical account of how badly mental health issues were handled during this era, because I've seen a lot of mud flung online and in historical fiction, and wanted to see if it was all based in fact. (Spoiler, yes the conditions were as bad as you think and maybe worse. It's less clear on whether relatives intentionally landed the inmates in these conditions as a matter of course, or if it was usually through ignorance.)

I was very pleasantly surprised by how engaging Nellie Bly's writing style was, and have added her novels to my TBR because I pretty much want to read everything she's written now.
