I’ve never read an alternative perspective novel, and honestly had low expectations of the format. However, I was really pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable A Study of Poisons was, and how much it changed the story overall.

I have terrible media memory and had to re-read Poison study whilst reading this book, but I do actually recommend reading them both simultaneously. It was really cute to fill in the gaps in the timeline, and witness the foundations of the characters' relationships be built from an alternate point of view.

First off, I Loved Poison Study. However, this written from Valek’s POV was slightly frustrating for me. I was annoyed with how often he talks about how amazing Yelena is but he just can’t tell her. After a certain point I just started skimming because I couldn’t take it anymore.

Probably won’t be reading again.

A solid read. Since this is the second POV a lot of the dialogue was repetition. Some needed to be included for the reader to understand where they were in the plot. Some of it really did not. Beyond that I felt like this book really added to the original story. I loved the side plots with Valek and him doing his job. Being able to see how smart he really is as well is fascinating. I'm excited for the second one in this series!

I love the original series and I will always read the narrative from another character’s perspective. I thought this was awesome and it was a throwback to the first time I read the series when it was published.
