🪽a wish for us...
i went into this book after having read (and been heartbroken over) a thousand boy kisses by the same author. she has said that this one is the most similar thing on her catalog to ATBK, so i wanted to read it but was also hesitant because oh how sad i imagined it would be. then she said on an instagram live that AWFU was not as sad as ATBK... which i would like to kindly say is bold faced lie.
Poppy and Rune did not make me cry as much as Bonnie and Cromwell did. About halfway through ATBK i made peace with what i guessed would be the ending, and although the whole book was still emotional, it let me prepare for it. with a wish for us, i spent the whole second half of the story holding my breath, praying that it would have a happy ending, and that the characters would have a chance at love. and the way it played out was the most devastating and gutwretching way possible. while Bonnie and Crom had a happy ending, it is one that came after they both overcame a lot of pain and loss. it was beautiful to see how much they helped the other find a new motivation for life, and how they inspired one another to not give up on theirs dreams and life purpose. i’m still incredibly sad thinking of Easton and all he went through.
my one grievance with the book would be the sort of idealization of suicide that was shown. although i can understand Bonnie using it as a way to cope with her loss, it was kind of implied that Easton’s suicide was his way to finally be happy. while i have at times felt that way, it is simply untrue that some people are not meant to be happy in this life. still, i understand why some people feel that way because i too have been there. i just would have liked it if there was stressed out more that his death was tragic and that there would have been a way for him to get better, instead of accepting it as the only way he had to escape his demons.

besides that, i liked the way the story handled Crom’s grief for his dad, and his struggles getting back to the music. and i loved how he used his renewed passion to help Bonnie when she needed it the most
