The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones follows a group of friends who committed an act that betrays their culture, traditions and their elders. While some of these characters are more haunted than others from this event, all will be subjected to atone for the act committed in their youth.

This book had me picking my jaw up off the floor so many times! Jones has created this raw and gritty story on what happens when a tradition is broken and the attempts to run away from it. While you are with some of the characters more than others, each one is met with a horror that I could not imagine encountering. Watching this characters descend into madness was both horrifying and intriguing.

The first several chapters in the book is slow, but once it hits the fan, the book is so action packed and unpredictable in the best way possible. I love how Jones weaved Blackfeet tradition throughout the story. I want to read more of his work!! I will warn that there is extremely graphic events involving animals and those parts are the hardest to get through. I was not initially warned about this going in.

I know many of the complaints about this book is the way in which it was written. It is a very relaxed way of story telling, almost like someone is telling you ghost stories by a fire. I ultimately think this way of telling the story only highlights Indigenous traditions as well as making you feel like you are present in the moment.

That was a tough read. It was gritty and kind of gore horror to me. I think it’s a super creative idea and brings in current life for native people and their traditions. It’s worth a read if you’re okay with gore. The triggers were a bit much for me!

The dogs
do not survive, unfortunately. None of them
This book was killer *ba dum tsss*
I loved it. All of the characters are really interesting, and you want to love the main four guys.
I guess 3, since we didn’t get much of Ricky at all
However
once Lewis describes exactly what happens in the woods, it’s very easy to understand Po’noka’s motivations.
this book was gory, heartbreaking, and actually really funny at some points. Really looking forward to reading some of SGJ’s other works.

I struggled in the beginning with this book, the writing style was different than everything I've ever read. At first it felt like the narrator wasnt sure what they were trying to say, and that was off putting but then I realized it was purposeful. Everyone in this story, except for Denorah, is an unreliable narrator. Every part not from her perspective is written in that way. Her parts are smooth and easy. Everyone else's a little choppy, a little distracted, a little unsure. Once I got the hang of it, it was better.

Each character's voice was unique. The story was nothing that I've ever read and it was dark as anything. I was not prepared for so much death. I'm going with a 4 only because the writing style was so hard. I found skipping to the second person for stuff in the second act (don't wanna spoil) to be really rough and kind of jarring.

I do really like how important Denorah, the fourteen-year-old daughter of one of the originally introduced characters became. I liked following the plot through characters so that it felt character driven but still moved by the plot.

I'll definitely be reading this author again.
