This book is insane. I took a break between the first part and the second because it's a lot to take in all at once. The social commentary on race and generational trauma is impeccable. The final part of the book kept me up all night on the edge of my seat until I finished. Everything about it was great. I'll definitely read more by SGJ.

I was told this book was scary - keeps you awake because the shadows are jumping out at you kind of scary.

I disagree.

It is a spooky story, sure. It’s shocking and gory, and it’s definitely unsettling, but what keeps you up at night isn’t the big bad.

It’s the haunting mechanism of sheer grief and injustice turning the world on its head.

Stomach churning in ways beyond the gore and blood, rather it’s the reflection and justifications that get you.

Phenomenally written, engrossing and haunting.

There was some really tight writing in this one, but for some reason the story didn't grab me like I really wanted it to.

I did finish it, and it was enjoyable, and there were some REALLY creepy parts in it...like, seriously some of the creepiest scenes I've read in a book before (I'll never look at an elk the same), BUT....I love books I get lost in.  Stories that are so immersive I forget I'm even reading, that make the rest of the outside world fade away a bit.

This was not that.

I was very conscious of my reading a book.  Conscious of what page I was on and what my progression was.  It was good enough to keep me going, but not so transportive that I lost myself in it. It felt a little like work.

It was still a satisfying read and I would still read another by this author - it really did have some great parts - the whole thing just didn't come together quite as strongly as I would have liked.
