Secret Prey by John Sandford

I really enjoy the Sanford Prey books. However, I wish Goodreads had a differentiation between literary fiction and entertainment. (Yes, there is overlap; yes, the difference is subjective; move along.) I started The Prague Cemetery by Eco immediately after, so I'm reluctant to give this book four stars, although it was enjoyable and suspenseful and did everything it was supposed to do, and then some. The Prague Cemetery is a different kind of fiction, and evokes a completely different response, and it, also, would get four stars. But there really is no comparison, and it annoys me that these two books are lumped into the same category.

Finally, another 5-star Davenport novel! This one was good because unlike most of the previous Prey books, the killer isn't revealed until later on in the book. Because of this, Sandford really nailed the suspense and intrigue. I think he's a better writer (and Lucas is a better character) when he's in detective-mode. Moving on to the next book shortly...

This is the strongest entry in Davenport series yet. Sandford deftly juggles the A-plot, about a wealthy businessman who is killed while deer hunting, with characterization and the fallout from the previous novel. I don't think it's entirely necessary to have read the novels leading up to this one, since Sandford does a good job of filling in the backstory, but it would probably help.

More than some of the previous novels, this is an out-and-out mystery, and it's fun to watch Davenport interact with the suspects and other people involved in the investigation. As usual, it's well-written, and very funny at times, but also suspenseful and compelling when it needs to be.

Highly recommended.

Lucas Davenport is always worth checking in with.

I was surprised by the ending, but that is a good thing. If Lucas Davenport ever materializes as a real person, I strongly recommend that you don't get to know him. People in his orbit seem to have some really bad days!

I love the Prey series. This was another good piece of the story.

Good beach read. Sandford seems in a groove in this series, the rough and somewhat awkward edges are done and the character, plot and development are following a path where things make sense, and work out, which is not always the case. I like the interactions the characters have and the way that the reader can connect with the plot. Well done.

I thought I had read all of these books, but apparently not.

The first of the series to have an intelligent, cunning female villain who gives Lucas a run for his money, but she's hampered by a backstory of sexual abuse and domestic violence. I'd prefer a female villain more like Susan O'Dell's character. Let's have a criminal motivated by "normal" issues. Enter Clara Rinker in the next book.

What I do appreciate is Weather. Not only does she show the effects of the violence so casually presented in this genre, but her presence also demonstrates character growth for Lucas, who is dealing with heartbreak.

The story took waaaay too long to wrap up Audrey.
The grandmas is my favorite final scene of the series so far. I love how all of Lucas's peers conspire to poke a little at the department superstar.

Great as always!! There is a line (look for it) about a trombone that is about the funniest line I've ever read in fiction, in spite of the circumstances. Great read!!!

Excellent as always. Even though I've read the whole series before, I usually can't remember the plot and whodoneit...this was not exception. Just an excellent series!
