At the end we learn that Ava was actually a swan that Samantha imagined to be a real person and it was still unclear at the end if Max was a real person. I felt the turn to “young woman in an arts program who possibly is suffering from psychosis and then snaps out of it” to ruin the message of the book a bit as it is such a tired plot line.
