This book was absolutely wonderful, so much fantastic representation and a really thoughtful look into queer struggles, one of my favourite things I’ve read so far this year and can’t wait for this authors next work.

In the first few lines of the prologue, the author managed to describe my entire state of existence for the last several months. Something I couldn’t even understand myself, let alone explain to others in written word. Needless to say, I was instantly connected to this character.

DNF at 20%.
I listened for 2 hours to give this novel a fair chance. It is not for me. I have no patience for long discussions about being gay is not a choice. And the very limited mentioning of the fiance make me fear this story is not about a relationship but one long inner monolog.
The narrator is no performer but a reader. I have major issues with his pauses between sentences. Pauses up to three seconds or more. You have to listen closely: if the next word is a conjucture you know it is still the same paragraph.

FAVOURITE BOOK THIS YEAR. Beautifully done LGBTQIA+ storyline with the characters (all very likeable and amusing) navigating cultural/religious differences, grief, therapy and faith. It sounds heavy but the author has spun this story so well that it's a breeze to read. Would definitely recommend, can't believe this is the author's debut novel!!

Amar and Joshua are engaged after two years of dating. You see they met in a bookshop a year after Amar's mother died. Amar has finally decided it's time to come out to his family. He knows it won't be easy especially because he is Muslim and their strong beliefs against same sex marriages. The next year however will prove to test Amar's inner turmoil between blending his religion and sexuality.
This was book was nothing short of beautiful, everything Amar had to endure family he lost as much as family he gained. At first it felt slow but it was as if it was a steady paced read, for the reader to truly understand what Amar as Muslim and as a human being had to endure to feel accepted by himself. Self acceptance is such an important feeling. It touched on diversity, LGBTQIA and mental health, grief. I highly recommend this book to anyone.
