A somewhat enjoyable and relaxing read if it were not for some details. Your best friend suddenly sprouts wings and you cheer and then be completely cool with it? No research, no anything?
Also, a millennial might lose their job and not have savings - a person of the age of the protagonist should have some, though. Especially since she's been the head of the department. As a basic minimum wage worker, perhaps. But not as a bigger fish in a successful company.
Then there's the whole legal thing surrounding the firing. Maybe that's the European in me, but... Firing someone on a not-even-a-day's notice, without former reprimands? Someone who's been at the company for at least over 20 years? That sounds massively illegal.
Onto the crow bringing a gold coin. Girl, that crow stole it somewhere. It's not yours to sell and spend the money! (Girl being the right term here, because these fourtysomethings behave like characters out of a YA, only with hurting joints.)
Another smaller mistake: In the beginning it was said that Queenie was roughly Luella's age and all of a sudden in the end she had gone to school with Luella's mum? But that might've simply slipped through during revisions.
And the magic system is also a bit wonky, but if the other bits hadn't been, I could've lived with that. (Creating a logically working magic system is a pain in the behind after all.)

I recognize spelling and grammatical errors happen and don't usually knock a star off for it but there's a first time for everything. There was just more than I could get past. The story was alright, the characters and romance eh and the names of certain people and places are embracingly cringy. I won't continue the series but there's potential here

A quick and light read.
It was a nice change to read about characters receiving superpowers during middle age. I get tired of reading about teenagers and young adults since those timelines and problems are no longer interesting or relevant to me.
I noticed some reviewers were perplexed by the characters getting labeled as witches. They don't do spells but they have magical/supernatural powers. I was intrigued by the familiar the lead got because it wasn't the traditional cat.
The book had some parts that should have gotten more explanation. It was decent enough to setup for a series though. I would read book 2 just to see what happens.

Some major plot holes but maybe I'm not the audience for it.

This story was very slow-paced and the characters don't have a lot of depth. Their reactions to magic are so flippant and it turns out the main character doesn't even have anything terrible going on in her life because it was manufactured by people in her life who want her to come into her magic . I thought about DNF-ing it and I should have.
