If I had nostalgia for this, I'm sure my rating would be 5 stars. But reading this for the first time now, after watching Anne with an E soooo many times, this just didn't live up to my expectations. Still, such a cute read <3

Oh my goodness oh my GOODNESS this book!! Makes my heart so happy!!!

PT: RATW: Prince Edward Island, books that have been on my TBR for too long, books that give me hope in humanity, redhead protagonists, xNFP culture, books made into a series

WIL
1) xNFP culture. Anne! Has such a bright and vivid outlook on life! True embodiment of joie de vivre, and it’s CONTAGIOUS.

2) enemies to friends (to lovers). Mi corazón! Mon cœur! The set up to Anne and Gilbert’s (inevitable) relationship is SO well paced and well-executed. I’m going to use this a reference text for my own works because holy SMOKES the pacing is PERFECT. The ups and downs, the interactions, the balance between each of the two dynamic characters is so perfectly woven into the narrative. Tightly stitched together in and balanced perfectly. I mean, was it predictable, yea, sure. But so what? I LOVED IT.

3) Character checks and balances. I’ve talked about the balance beam of character checks and balances before, but a refresher: creating foil characters that can still peaceably interact and create a believable, atmospheric narrative is insanely difficult and is so rarely accomplished with a precision that leaves the reader feeling like the book’s world is realistic. BUT WOW. WOWOWOW MONTGOMERY! This lass managed to include sharply diverse characters with flaws that complemented and highlighted traits of ALL THE OTHER CHARACTERS in a massive web of complicated but perfectly linked traits. It’s like that scene in the good place, where Michael is planning which humans to bring down to the underworld and analyzes their traits and possible relationships to each other. THAT but make it an incurable idealistic children’s book. Some particularly strong examples of character checks and balances: Marilla and Anne as stoicism vs exuberance but both hoping to be a positive force in the world. Marilla and Matthew as both forces of reservation BUT Marilla is more decisive and forceful and Matthew is more soft-hearted and gentle. Gilbert and Anne where both are strong willed and have high aspirations. Both want to be fundamentally good and make an impact and both value adventure. Both hold grudges but learn temperance with time. Anne is more of a whirlwind though, and Blythe has a steadiness about him that Anne DESPERATELY needs to learn. FaNTASTIC. The intricacy of all the relationships I’m-

4) mistakes. Anne is so relentlessly courageous and WILLING to make mistakes. She values trying over everything else, and god, what a wonderful hero for children to look up to. She makes mistakes, she learns, she grows, she continues trying. I JUST LOVE HER SO MUCH.

WIDL
1) the next book isn’t available yet. I have to be patient and wait for a copy to be returned to the digital library. Agonizing.

Much adored book from childhood. Still adored now, even if I’m now connecting more with Marilla than Anne, and yes, Matthew’s death still made me cry.

Ann has a big imagination, gets adopted by a sister brother duo, and eventually grows up to be a beautiful woman

Lovely little book, doesn't matter if you're a boy or a girl, it's a nice book
