This is the second time I read this book and I enjoyed it just as much this time around. I really like the narrator Cal but I think I like his big brother even more. The interaction between the brothers was fun and the story and secondary characters were great as well. I already started the next book in the series which I haven't read.

Loved the story but did not care for the narrator.

This is a really good example of the urban fantasy genre, new ideas and a fresh take. It's a reread, but worth the time.

I'm a HUGE fan of this series. Thurman creates a world that is so easy to lose yourself in. I flew through the first 3 books in less than 2 days.

I enjoyed this more than I expected. It kept me quite entertained and made me chuckle a couple of times. That was good. In public. Not that good.

It's a promising addition to my urban fantasy shelf.

This sounds right up my alley, but sadly for me didn't really deliver. I live a snarky and bad tempered main character, and was really looking forward to this at the start!

After here teh review goes into what I didn't like, no actual story spoilers, but possible minor spoilers for those who are very sensitive to them, so read on with caution if you hate *any sort* of tiny spoiler!

--------------

Sadly to me the characters felt like walking, talking 3D cutouts of typical tropes. The one thing that kept me reading was the main character being a half human, half monster which felt unique! Aside from that it was like a bad version of the Winchester brothers - seemingly always winning against everything that comes their way, with cheating if necessary and just inhumanly fast, strong and quiet. Even the human brother... The perfect killing machine that had no other motivation than his brother, which made it too shallow. I liked the brothers as a main theme a lot, but the whole relationship just felt flat and coerced to me. While Dean and Sam feel fleshed out and have their own goals and morals and motivations, these two just ambled along, for the plots sake.

The main side characters also was so very predictable and didn't feel real to me in the slightest.

Add to this a lot of jokes that just fell flat for me and innuendo that had me rolling my eyes and I barely made it to try end. I was wondering why there was such a focus on things, like one character using her "breasts" to get her way but that being fine, and later a character being all astounded when his penis shrinks to nothing when scared, and who on earth thinks about his penis, much less feels it needs being written into urban fantasy? (I mean in paranormal romance maybe, but this one doesn't have romance, so - just why? I think it was supposed to be funny, but I think I outgrew that sort of humour at age 10, if I ever had it?)

All in all its not a horrible book, but it's not at all my cup of tea, and I would have wanted a lot more depth to enjoy it.

One of my favorite authors doing what she does best. Been a fan since her fan fic days.

I didn't finish this. I got about 10% in and I'm not enjoying it (it's so "gritty," the characters are so joyless), so I've decided to cut myself loose. I have sooo many other books I want to read.

Yay!

I love the story, the characters, the setting, and the wit.

Didn't really like the way it was written. Can I do that? Like everything except the way the author writes? I don't hate it, I'm just not a fan...

But I will most definitely pick up the rest of the series regardless. :D
