Heavy on the body horror in the best way ever, and I would highly recommend this novel if that's your bread and butter. Exceptionally written. The descriptions here were masterful and the flashbacks felt like viewing the characters' trauma through a thick marmalade. I personally prefer a bit more of a psychological thriller--that is to say, tons of twists and a more comprehensible horror that makes me afraid to sleep without a night light--but this one is very Lovecraft-esque and blanketed in an otherworldly, primal fear that will haunt me in a much different sense.

I liked this author’s writing and the first 100 pages were great. I read some other reviews before leaving mine because a lot of them resonated with how I feel. After the first 100 pages, I was wondering where this was going to go. I really hoped that it would all come together but the ending reminded me of the horrible ending to the show ‘The 100’. I thought this was a horror novel… not science fiction… so I was very disappointed. As I other people have said. The last 100 pages were very unnecessary. Could have left it to the reader’s imagination and I would have liked the book. I honestly don’t know if I’ll read another Nick Cutter book because this one really put me off. It had so much potential but it was wasted which made me frustrated.

Cutter has such a captivating writing style, but the story feels disjointed and tacked together in a rush, especially at the end. With such a fascinating concept, I can't believe I was bored through the first 7 hours of the audiobook.

I can't stress enough how desperately Mr Cutter needs to seek out therapy. I've never been driven to feeling physically sick from a book before. I've had fainting spells that have hurt less than reading this book. One time I trapped my nail in a car door and I watched it rot and fall out aged 8 and that experience scarred me less than this book. If given the choice to die or read this book again- I would already have my tickets booked for Sweden. What the fuck is wrong with this author, something truly terrible must have happened to him
