Vivid descriptions, Cutter’s style is easy to follow but not for the faint of heart. If you enjoy horror with body horror and crippling claustrophobia, you might enjoy.

the troop by nick cutter was one of absolute favourites this year and truly the mastery over body horror this guy has makes me wanna study his brain. and that thing persists here too!! that being said i didn't like this one as much i hoped to do.

lemme break it down for ya:

parts 1, 2 & 3? utterly boring and mind-numbing and the whole writing down the sounds made didn't help. also i DIDN'T appreciate the numerous flashbacks that went on for pages. they could've been done away with.

parts 4 & 5? HELL YEAH, that's my stuff!! horrors beyond human comprehension & feeling helpless? fuck yes!! the writing was still meh tho especially with those internal voices inside luke's mind. it was silly & brought you out of the story lol.

part 6? i- we don't speak about it lol.

Like a lot of horror/thrillers this book suffers from hitting the peak amount of tenseness a person can feel really early on and then maintaining it instead of giving the reader relief then building tension again.  By the end I was skimming.  Bad guy is bad because of mental illness. Wish it had been a short story.  Would be a good premise for a video game.

I didn’t get into this one as much as I did with The Troop. I think if you like old school horror sci-fi, you’ll enjoy this book. The flashback storyline with the son creeped me out way more than the current storyline. Overall it was a page turner.

This book was one that was hard for me to put down and not read in one sitting. Right from the start, you get hooked into this little story of what you think the book will be about, but instead, almost immediately you're thrown into a story of trauma, body horror, and a confusing mess of a situation. It doesn't help that the entirety of the book takes place 8 miles below land with descriptions of hallways and rooms that make you physically feel tight and uncomfortable as you read. The characters infuriate you and have you questioning your own sanity and understanding along the way. I know I gave some pretty heavy tags, but I just wanted to cover all the bases of what is even mentioned in the book.

I can't stress enough how desperately Mr Cutter needs to seek out therapy. I've never been driven to feeling physically sick from a book before. I've had fainting spells that have hurt less than reading this book. One time I trapped my nail in a car door and I watched it rot and fall out aged 8 and that experience scarred me less than this book. If given the choice to die or read this book again- I would already have my tickets booked for Sweden. What the fuck is wrong with this author, something truly terrible must have happened to him
