A sweet story that reminds me why I love YA. The enemies to lovers but not really and only make jabs because it is the only way to get their attention was so well done!

Reid deserved better. Natalie is a terrible character.

Thank you to Marisa Kanter for sending me an ARC of AS IF ON CUE. The book is out today!
Broadway lovers, this one's for you. I loved so much about this book: the play/musical aspect, the prank wars, enemies-to-lovers, the complicated relationship with a parent, THE JEWISH REP!, and a good slow burn.
Natalie and Reid's parents are best friends, so naturally their lives are intertwined. Since they were young, Natalie and Reid have been enemies and in an ongoing prank war. Natalie is a writer for her high school plays, and Reid is in the school's band. When their school decides to cut funding for every arts program besides the band, their rivalry becomes even bigger and turns into a prank war that ends up affecting the people around them. The major prank war ends up leaving them in a situation were they have to work together as co-directors of a musical that will hopefully get the school board to reconsider the arts budget.
This was such a cute and fun read. You get invested in Natalie vs. Reid first and foremost. It's entertaining to read about pranks, plays, musicals and, of course, romance. The romance aspect of the book isn't center stage, but once it hits, it hits hard.
There were times where I felt the prank wars went on a little too long and there was some unnecessary detail, but it didn't detract from the story so it's not too big of a deal to me.

What happens when you take pranks too far and ruin something your frenemy has been working towards his whole life? This book. This book was cute and funny and I enjoyed the prank war and how everything ended up.

natalie is aggressively childish and beyond selfish, there were far too many modern day references (pls stop mentioning tik tok in books), and the flashbacks felt unnecessary — other than that it was decent (but i never would have forgave natalie if i was reid)

***Thank you to NetGalley for providing this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review***
I was a little disappointed in this one. It's a solid YA, but for me the pacing was just a little too slow. Natalie and Reid have been in each other's lives since birth, as their fathers are long time close friends. Reid's affinity for music sort of unknowingly usurps the the affections of Natalie's father causing a current lifelong prank rivalry back and forth. Natalie and her theatre group realize they are in danger of losing their funding while Reid, and the school's band (led by Natalie's father) receive uncontested support from the school administration. Natalie and company decide to try to save their program through a production of an original musical. Through a variety of circumstances (including a prank gone too far), Natalie and Reid must work together.
The writing is solid, and the characters are real - sometimes they are likeable, sometimes less so. But the pacing of the relationship development for Natalie and Reid just didn't really work for me. And the idea that Natalie could just be a little honest in her feelings and most of the animosity would've been long dealt with was a little frustrating.

I enjoyed this overall, but I HATE pranks, so it gave me some anxiety. And the big one was HUGE. Like...not a prank, but a horrible decision that I'm not sure would have been forgivable.

I really enjoyed this book. Natalie Jacobsen is a junior in high school and her friends unite to save the arts when budget cuts threaten to end most extra curricular activities in the arts, except the band which is advised by her father. Natalie and her best friend Henry wrote a play over the summer called Melted- the opposite of Frozen about the climate crisis as an opposite of Frozen. Except will the school fund the play? Natalie teams up w her friends and rival Reid Callahan, who is her father's clarinet protégé and son of her parents best friends, sister to Hannah, Natalie's younger sister Delia's best friend. There's chemistry between Reid and Natalie. Their prank war gets in the way majorly and propels the play into a musical.
Trigger warning for emotional dad - daughter communication issues, microaggressions for Jewish people of Anti Semitism. Excellent representation for Jewish, LGBTQ, etc. There is something Natalie does with about 20% of the book left that had me mad and difficult to defend. Trying to remember she is 17 years old and teens react with emotion and without logic, still was a pivotal point where it was difficult to sympathize with her. Cute PG13 romance though.
