Good in parts. He's good at personal detail and lurid stories. It was nice how characters from history would link up and reoccur. However, the whole thing is just too much. I think the idea of the book just doesn't work that well.

Overall this book was really insightful while ambitious. It should have been called A Family History of the Ruling Class, because ultimately that is what it was about. I thought there would be more information about family structures across time and geography. However, this book filled on a lot of gaps to my own knowledge of world history and has given me some threads to follow on continued readings. Thank you for undertaking this!
