This might be my favorite of the valley of the old gods books so far. It was a tad confusing at times but Dalia Davies has such beautiful prose and can really put a story together in a short amount of time.

I was really intrigued by the idea of an erotic story with Death but I was left disappointed by this book. The pace of the plot it's weird, sometimes slow and other times way to fast, the characters felt not fully developed or at least not fully presented to me, I don't feel like I know any of them. As for the "steamy" scenes, well... they go by so fast it's not even erotic, and I think they lack sensuality, there's not enough description for me.
I am kind of curious about the whole world building, I think it's really interesting but I just don't like the writing style.

there is slice but it’s pretty tame compared to the Easter Bunny ones. the storyline in this one surprised me. i though it was very interesting and this world is very thought out.

I tried so hard to like this one but I really could not. I found Onna deeply unlikable and wallowing in her own self pity. I found the way she “saved” her brother disturbing and it felt more like a punishment for him. Not to say suicide is a good thing, but her reason for it all was to assuage her own guilt, not actually help her brother. I also did not quite get the chemistry between her and Death. It felt like I barely got to know Death, therefore cared little for what he did and why he did it.
It was nice to see more of Ari and get more lore on her and some fun reappearances from Lily and Eebie. Mostly, I just want an Ari story in full.

This book killed me a little inside. If I hadn’t wanted all the juicy world-building for the larger series, I would have DNF’d this book. The series world-building that happens in the book makes it well worth reading this, but that doesn’t negate how painful of a read this was. Lack of communication from both Death and Onna was rampant. If these two had had a single proper conversation in the over two centuries of Onna’s life, then two centuries of suffering wouldn’t have happened. The themes of this book are dark and twisted and the plot is convoluted, but unlike the rest of the series this book does not have enough smut to make the pain worth it.
The ending is perfect and fabulous, but I don’t think it was worth all the pain of the book leading up to that point.
