A moving, horrifying post-apocalyptic story. Religious trauma: the book. Heavy-handed allegory for transness woven seamlessly with horror and pain. I wish I had read this book as a teen. I found the ending (last 1/3 of the book, really) felt a bit rushed and the story minorly suffered because of it, but still enjoyed it. LONG CW list, read the whole list before you dive into this one.

Queer, trans Appalachian teen turning into a monster to defeat the religious trauma he was raised with? Absolutely yes, in every way <3 The pacing was a little uneven and some of the gory parts were quite literally nauseating but that's the only things that altered my rating. Overall, an incredible debut!

Really well written gory horror story that will have readers grit their teeth to get through. Set in a dystopian world where a religious cult unleashes Armageddon on the world, then tries to control it.  Or rather him. Benji is the bioweapon that the cult wants to use to control the fate of humanity, but he's not under their control any longer. After escaping, he's taken in by a local group of LGBTQIA+ teens who he hopes could become friends, maybe even a family, but he's still a walking biohazard with a well armed cult after him. This book has a lot of visceral descriptions of body fluids, violence towards LGBTQIA+ folks, body shaming, misgendering/deadnaming, abuse and self-harm.
