cute with a solid concept, but ultimately not very memorable.

I've always been fairly hesitant to pick up short story collections. Too afraid that the stories wouldn't be able to captivate me, that the characters would be too unfamiliar to care about. Hungry Hearts has proved me wrong. I adored almost every single story in this book, and I'm walking away from this collection with a renewed love for food and a list of authors I want to read more of.

PLEASE give this a try. Even if you don't like short stories. Even if you're afraid this won't be for you. You won't regret it.

my favorite stories (in no particular order)
Rain by Sangu Mandanna
Kings and Queens by Elsie Chapman
Sugar and Spite by Rin Chupeco
The Slender One by Caroline Tung Richmond
The Missing Ingredient by Rebecca Roanhorse
Panadería ~Pastelería by Anna-Marie McLemore

This was uneven, as I find most short story collections are for me. I loved the concept of all these food-related stories and this connected neighborhood of restaurants, but execution was not what I expected. It felt like all the stories I was most intrigued by were the ones that ended too quickly.

I loved, loved this collection of short stories!  Yes, the writing varies from story to story -- not only in quality of writing, but also in tone and even genre.  I've not read many short story collections, but I was surprised when some stories in this collection were fantasy or magical realism or horror, all interspersed with general fiction.  All of the stories take place along one street in a small town.  The characters often show up in multiple stories, yet each story focuses on one restaurant on Hungry Hearts Row.  I really enjoyed the connecting threads trailing through the stories.

I listened to this on audio, which was great for hearing the pronunciation of various cultural elements.  However, I think a hard copy would be great for those (like me) interested in learning more about the various dishes and foods mentioned.

Collection of Short Stories? Check. Stories about magical food or the love of food? Check. Filipino witches who cook sinigang?? CHECK. This book was tailor made for me. Filled with stories about love, magic, and most importantly… food.

First of all, not going to rate the book as a whole because some stories were a big hit and others just a miss. I really liked that the characters of the different stories kept reappearing throughout the different stories in the book.
What I didn’t like was that the stories were different genres. I expected contemporary stories but there were also fantasy and mystery-ish stories as well. Most were contemporary but there were a few other genres and they just felt SO out of place. These weren’t bad necessarily but for me personally I dont think they belonged in this this anthology.

I’m either rating these 5, 3 or 1 stars (so a simple like, mediocre or dislike) because they’re short stories so there isn’t enough content to make these more specific and I dont have time for that
