This book had several moments of blindingly good, soul-wrenching writing- those moments made me cry and rejoice in what Slate was doing. Those moments were brave and vulnerable and honest. The rest made me ask how many times I could tolerate a white feminist making jokes about balls and giving voice to her “quirky millennial” politics/personality. The womanchild, “I’m so small and delicate” of it all will work for some people, but I imagine most will find it grating and hard to understand.  I think she knew that, which I applaud.  Bravo to Jenny for writing this book for herself, but I may not have been the target audience.

what a delightful little treat to start the year with! Jenny Slate delivers: meaningful mantras; flowery-prose-filled-dreams; and how to care for a hungry heart <3

I read this book back in 2019 via audio, but lately I found myself missing it and wanting to read it physically, so here we are. I loved it then, I love it now. This book is part memoir, part short stories, part poetry, but 100% Jenny Slate (I said the same thing in my old review, but that doesn't make it any less true). As silly as this book can be, it also tackles subjects like loneliness, anxiety&depression, childhood, relationships & more with the utmost sensitivity and relatability. The book often is written so lyrically that it reads like fiction even though most of it is nonfiction. It's an interesting, short and sweet peak into Jenny Slate's mind and it's a book I know that I will continue to come back to.
