i read 'i wrote this for you' back when i was first starting college and my first serious relationship was starting to crack. i was just wandering the poetry section of b&n and found this gem calling out to me. just the title called to me and i went on an emotional ride.

'i wrote this for you' is formatted like a tumblr post or an instagram post with a picture and a 'deep' caption. that might have been a reason why i was so drawn to it before reading anything. it reminded me of using lyrics or a quote as a caption, haha.

the first crack is the last

i lied when i told you i forgot. i know it doesn't seem like a big thing but i wanted to tell you the truth and never, ever lie to you.
because that's how it starts.

i lend this out to friends when they're going through a hard time and just needs a hug. it's the one i pick up when things in life are getting a bit too out of hand and i need something simple, like just a few words, to ground me again.

there will be something in here for you. i mean, it's written for you. don't think too deeply. don't try and see more than what's just there. let the words wash over you, drown you for a second, and when it leaves, the air that rushes into your lungs will feel like what breathing for the first time felt like. maybe that was just me, but i'm sure there's something for you in 'i wrote this for you'.

Um livro com vários poemas incrível e reflexivos para vida. Bem curto, mas essencial.

If you are looking for elegant poetry with wonderful imagery and words put together in a beautiful way you've never thought of before, skip this book.

This book reminds me of Lang Leav, whose work I do not enjoy. It took me a year to finish this book, which is a pity because I remember being really excited for it at first.

When I read poetry, I expect to feel something. Of course, poetry doesn't have to make literal sense, but I expect the meaning of the poem to be felt.

In this book, everything is said, and nothing is shown. You are told how to feel, and why you are feeling this way. The words are flat and literal and boring. For example:

The Whole World Is Watching

You're younger than you'll be tomorrow. You've never been closer to the day you die. Go. Now.

The Person Happiness Became

So if you love me but you don't need me, you don't love me.

Most of the book is filled with sappy lines like those. Yes, there are a few lines I loved such as

I am made of ghost notes, from songs you never heard.

There are a number of pieces that would have worked very well if only the author trusted the reader to infer and make their own meaning more. A pity; I so wanted to like this book.

DNF 52 pages in.

I bought this book when it was quite cheap and thought I would like it because, in general, I enjoy poetry. I struggled a bit with this book. I just found all the poems to be a bit...nothing. They were all very surface level and although they seemed nice when I first read them I found I forgot them immediately after putting the book down. There wasn't any depth to them in my opinion and it just seemed like they were a bit cliche, written in a formulaic way to appeal to a wide audience. Not the book for me but others might still enjoy it.

I really love this audiobook. I have to say, it is the best I have ever listened to. The songs in between and the background music whilst listening to such a very heartfelt pain of the author. You can sense the longing and hope, I love the small parts where the chapter changes by the sound that tapes make. I just love this! definitely give it a read and you won't regret it.

“Don’t you dare tell me nothing matters. Everything matters. Every fucking drop of rain, every ray of sunlight, every wisp of cloud matters and they matter because I can see them and if I can see them then I know they can see me and I know that there’s an entire world that cares out there, hiding behind a world that doesn’t, afraid to show who it really is and with or without you, I will drag that world out of the dirt and the blood and the muck until we live in it. Until we all live in it.”
