The worldbuilding was decent, I can say that much. Otherwise, I felt this was far longer than necessary with too many characters to keep track of. I also found it strange that the author did not explain any backstory for the reader; rather, the story appears to start in the middle. 

I would have preferred more information about the technology and engineering of these future civilizations. How did Earthlings go from landing on the moon to

intergalactic eugenics and war

? Where was the science in this science fiction?

This is a very low 3 for me. The premise is intriguing and I like the idea of the plot. However, the slow pace and the execution remind me of the Wheel of Time and it took a lot of enjoyment away from the story. I won’t be continuing the series but I will watch the movie. 
(It’s probably my most disappointing book of the year)

Finally it’s over.. this took me way too long to finish. I have pretty mixed feelings about it but I think I was biased towards the films from the beginning anyway, having watched both part 1 and 2 before reading.
I see why it’s such a classic, the world building is so in-depth and grand. I can’t put my finger on what I disliked though - I just found myself forcing myself to pick it up, and not particularly looking forward to it.
I’m glad I’ve finished it now, i was determined to get through it. Maybe I’ll try it again one day and will love it.

I have to start out by saying this is the most unique book I've ever read. Everything - from characters, to plot, to the world - felt unique to this story and I really am at a loss trying to compare it to anything. The world building is just absolutely amazing and complex. Characters are deeply connected with the world and their histories. 

I went into this book expecting it to be slow and was very surprised by how fast paced it actually is. And despite the pace, it still ends feeling like the introduction to the story (because it basically is) and I can't say that upsets me. 

The only criticism I have is that there are some things that feel like they should've been major plot points that were just glossed over - again not an issue I was expecting from an almost 800pg book. 

Overall, I highly recommend if you are a fan of sci-fi, fictional politics, or religion. I will definitely be looking for the rest of the series.

Still holds up as an engaging text despite it's age. Serves as a warning that is still relevant to a modern audience. Offers a greater depth to all of the main characters then what is provided by the new films (which are still strong adaptations) with the exception of Chani, who I believe is actually more nuanced in Dune Part 2 (2024).

It's possible some could be offended by the possible misuse of islamic aesthetics however I am not in a position to comment on whether or not this is a problem as I am white.

Dune is a classic, and its spot on every sci-fi fan's shelf is well earned. The writing is dense but compelling, sucking you in like the whirlpools of the deserts of Arrakis. Every writing decision in here that I could critique I understand the reasoning behind it. The time skip between parts 2 and 3 is off-putting (and a personal pet peeve), but understandable. Walking through all those 3 long years would have extended the book unnecessarily and made it go from slow-paced to downright molasses-like. The switching between internal thoughts can be difficult to keep track, however it does add to the tension of the novel, and best explains the political maneuvering without being blunt about it. 

Honestly, if you have any curiosity about this book at all, I recommend you pick it up. If you're a fan of fantasy political novels, I also recommend picking this up, as I would call it more science fantasy with a dash of hard science. It is, in a word, fantastic.
